HMS Forward (1939 - 1945)
(The Secret Tunnels of South Heighton)
Discover the full facts about this previously undisclosed secret underground Naval Command Headquarters known as HMS Forward and NOIC Newhaven from 1941 to 1945. This 'cradle to grave revelation' details the conception, design, excavation, fitting-out, equipping, operation and purpose of the 500 metres of complex labyrinth excavated 22 metres beneath a large country house one mile north-east of Newhaven.
In 1993 the Imperial War Museum and Ministry of Defence denied it ever existed. So began the quest for knowledge about the establishment and the search for veterans who could provide it. But how to find them? Appeals were made by way of local and national newspapers, radio, television, Oracle teletext pages, and countless military veterans' association publications over four years. The scattered retained artefacts and memorabilia held collectively by these veterans have revealed more detail than could ever be imagined. Right down to the original 1941 excavation drawings marked up with daily progress, man-hours and materials records!
"AFTER THE BATTLE" magazine ATB135, published on 15 February 2007 contains a 6000-word well-illustrated 12-page article about HMS Forward.
